Colyte / Nulytely Patient Preparation

  1. Two days before your procedure, go to the drugstore and purchase flavored or unflavored Colyte/Nulytely (prescription required)

  2. Disregard the instructions on the Colyte/Nulytely bottle and only follow our instructions. Refrigerate the Colyte/Nulytely for improved taste.

  3. In the 24 hours prior to your procedure, you should have no solid foods, only clear liquids. Clear Liquids means if you can see through them, you can have them. This includes soft drinks, strained juices without pulp, black coffee, broths, Jell-o, popsicles, and hard candy. DO NOT drink or eat anything with red or purple coloring.

  4. Drink Colyte/Nulytely over approximately a 4 hour period in the afternoon or evening on the day prior to your procedure (This means you should drink 8 oz every 15 minutes or so). The unflavored Colyte/Nulytely can be mixed with Crystal Light or sugar free Kool-Aid to improve the taste (not red or purple).

  5. If you become bloated or nauseated, stop drinking the Colyte/Nulytely for 30-45 minutes. It is important that you drink the entire gallon to make sure you are adequately prepped for the colonoscopy. Colyte/Nulytely causes you to have diarrhea and works like a strong laxative. Please keep this in mind and stay close to a restroom!

  6. Medications - You should continue your use of medications except:
    • Iron supplements
    • Aspirin or other pain medication (Tylenol may be used)
    • Blood thinners, for example Coumadin, Plavix, or Persantine

These medicines should be stopped three days before your procedure. If you take any of these medications, talk to the doctor or the assistant. Also, discuss any case of diabetes you may have with the doctor or assistant.

  7. Take your other medications the day of the procedure with a small amount of water. DO NOT eat or drink anything that day until after your procedure.

  8. Please make transportation arrangements for your test day, as you will be unable to drive home after your procedure.

If you have any questions or problems with your preparation, please feel free to contact our office, day or night at
